Interior Design Review, January 2019: "Best Interior Design on the Planet"
Richard Mishaan Design
New York City, United States
"Fashion and interiors are not that different and yet sometimes they are worlds apart."
Richard Mishaan is celebrating his company's 25th anniversary, a quarter century during which there has been much to reflect on. After attending Colombia University, Mishaan worked in fashion, eventually designing men's and women's collections under his own label. In 1993, he went back to his first love: interior architecture and design. Mishaan opened an office on Fifth Avenue, starting with residential projects but was quickly invited to design retail and hospitality projects for companies such as Sony Corportation and Starwood Hotels. He was then presented with the opportunity to design furniture for Donghia, marking the beginning of years now designing furniture, lighting, textiles, and accessories for some of the world's best firms. Mishaan was born in Bogota, Colombia at a time of political unrest, forcing his family to move from the place they loved and leaving them heartbroken in the process. Because Colombia's rich culture has informed so much of who he is, Mishaan decided years later to buy a home in Cartagena, affording him time in the country of his birth. He is now renowned for an impressive style of interiors based on his vast design know-how and roots. For last year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House, Mishaan transformed the living space in a 19th-century residence into a modern-day interpretation of Italian architecture and set design legend Renzo Mongiardino. The highlight: wallpaper from Iksel Decorative Arts sporting a design discovered on vintage wood paneling in a Syrian mansion.
