Luxe Interiors May/June 2018: "Silver Anniversary: Richard Mishaan"

It's been 25 years since New York designer Richard Mishaan began infusing interiors with his signature style rich with textures and layers-- plus releasing lighting, art, accessories and furnishings collections along the way. We sat down with the Colombian-born talent to reflect on his career.

Luxe: Looking back, what fond memories do you have as a rising designer?

Richard Mishaan: The early moment at my New York shop, Homer, were very special to me-- especially when I discovered unknown designers whose work we introduced in America, such as Herve Van der Straeten, Eric Schmitt, and Olivier Gagnere.

Luxe: How has the industry evolved in the past 25 years?

Richard Mishaan: Technology has really changed things. It has made it much easier to communicate with clients during the design process as well as when on shopping trips; in the past, we could rely only on landlines, so cell phones and constant internet access has really helped speed things up. The amount of information now available can be both a blessing and a curse.

Luxe: How has Richard Mishaan Design changed between then and now?

Richard Mishaan: Like anything, when you first start out, it can be hard to have the amount of manpower needed to accomplish all tasks at hand, especially when those tasks are big, elaborate projects. Now, I have a strong team of designers and assistants who help with everything from project management to purchasing, with access to the best resources around.
